WEEK #34 - CYCLING SHORTS

News

ASO, the Tour de France organisers, have issued a health protocol, which includes the removal of a whole team if two people (riders or staff) test positive to COVID-19. This could greatly influence the race result, especially as several riders now have tested positive and have had to abandon race plans and go into quarantine.

Marion Sicot has filed formal complaints with the police and the UCI against her team Doltcini-Van Eyck and manager Marc Bracke, following sexual harassment, breach of contract, discrimination and fraud. Sicot tested positive for EPO last June and later she confirmed taking the drug following the harassment from her team and manager. Sicot was bullied into sending photos of herself in a bikini to prove she was losing weight as she was considered too big by her manager.

It feels like an end of an era for British cycling or at least a change of the guard. After showing poor form in the last month of racing, Team INEOS left out both former Tour winners, Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas, from the team selected for the Tour de France. Richard Carapaz has been selected as co-leader to Egan Bernal. A few days later, Bahrain - McLaren left Mark Cavendish out of their Tour team. Cavendish hasn't found his form in two years due to recovery from mononucleosis and struggling to find his top speed. All three riders are 34 and 35 years old, so increasingly unlikely to ever win the Tour again or in the case of the Isle of Man sprinter, beat Merckx's stage wins record.

Steven Kuijswijk's injury at the Critérium du Dauphiné turned out to be worse than expected. With a fractured shoulder to recover from, the Dutch rider will miss the Tour de France.

Guy Niv will be the first Israeli rider to ride the Tour de France with Israel Start-Up Nation.

The Men's and the Women's Australian race Jayco Herald Sun Tour are the first cancellations of 2021.
