WEEK #30 - CYCLING SHORTS

News

Annemiek Van Vleuten took the first win of the post-lockdown race, the Emakumeen Nafarroako Klasikoa, finishing solo by 18 seconds in front of Mavi Garcia (Alé BTC Ljubljana) and by 27 seconds in front of Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team). And then went on to win the next two races as well, showing stellar form.

After the withdrawal of Alpecin-Fenix from the Sibiu Tour, it was the turn of Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec, Gazprom-RusVelo and Sangemini-Trevigiani to cancel their participation in the Romanian stage race (although for the Russian team it was not a choice but restrictions in Romania towards Russian nationals). A spike in coronavirus cases in the east European country is especially worrying some of the teams who are hoping to race the upcoming Grand Tours and classics.

Italian authorities have now imposed 14 days quarantine for people returning from Romania or Bulgaria, meaning that the Italian riders who took part in the Sibiu Tour, won't be able to race until 11 August, missing out on Strade Bianche, Trittico Lombardo, Milano-Torino and Milano-Sanremo (if they were to be selected). It is not clear if this would apply to foreign riders as well.

CCC-Liv won't go to Spain for the Emakumeen Nafarroako Klasikoa and Klasikoa Navarra, also for concerns over COVID-19 tests and precautions.

Staff and riders of Team Altopack-Eppela were handed bans and fines after an investigation sparked from the death of Linus Rumsas in 2017. The young rider died of a heart attack at the age of 21 and subsequently some team staff and riders have been found to be involved in various doping offences. Rumsas' brother was banned for four years, and even more notoriously both his father and mother had serve bans and jail times for doping-related offences.

Team INEOS will be called INEOS Grenadier for the Tour de France, with a changed look, to advertise the launch of one of their products.

The list of cancellations as a result of the pandemic grows bigger with the two Canadian World Tour races, the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, exiting the 2020 calendar.

Manuela Fundación, the company that failed to take over Mitchelton-Scott, is in talks with CCC Team.
